Ideas

I have had an idea to use boxes in the band scene of our video. Whilst we are performing the boxes will be at the side of us each with every letter 'BOOTY' on separate boxes. But after we have filmed the whole song a few times, we will move the boxes around for the chorus and cut in and out of the boxes moving, whilst we are standing still, so it looks as if the boxes are moving all around us. So I went to a stationary shop and bought 2 packets of coloured flat pack boxes and we stuck 'B' 'OO' 'T' and 'Y' onto each box. We are yet to film our band scene yet

Filming part 2

The second part of our filming took place in a boys bedroom, this part took longer as it will make up a larger part of the video, so we done 4 takes of the whole song lip synced, from 2 different angles, and also done small parts that are not lip synced which just describe what was going on at that exact moment in the song. We have tried to implement a lot of humour into our video and thought a lot about that whilst filming,  this is because the band who's song we are making a video to, the midnight beast, also try to make their videos humorous. We are also conforming to the genre as we are lip syncing the track. All filming was captured and we are currently editing the footage.

Filming part 1

We have filmed 2 parts of our video so far, the first being in a girls bedroom with three girls, well two girls and one boy dressed as a girl. We thought it would add comedic effect if two of the girl characters were played by males, poorly dressed as women, with one woman alongside them. But once in costume one of the males felt too embarrassed and was giving an awful performance, so he was released and we brought in an actual female. So the end result was one male character in what can only be described as dreadful drag and the other two girls dressed as they would to a sleepover. The part of the music video is about 3 girls that ring the 3 main male characters as a 'booty call' so we had to act flirtatious whilst on the phone. We got all of the footage and we are currently editing it.

Target Audience - Survey Monkey Results

These results tell us our target audience is people between the ages of 16-24 of any gender, that our target audience likes fun and energetic videos and thatour target audience enjoys indie and r'n'b music. This means we will make our video to fulfill the needs of our target audience without trying to comprimise the feelings of the song and the vibe that the band were trying to get across
As there is 6 sides we thought 3 could be taken up by the 3 individual band members with mug shots like they are going to prison. This would be funny and show each band members individual character. We thought the back could be a track list, like in most other digipaks but there being a difference in which the 3 band member s are holding card with the track list on. We thought the front page could be the 3 of us, but with our heads on different bodies, of beasts like werewolves, i.e the midnight 'beast'. The final side we thought we could have a screenshot from our video, to tease the audience into watching our video

Digipak Ideas - Brainstorm

This is the spider diagram we made to display the brainstorm we had on our digipak. We thought we could use the cliche prisoner mug shot to display each individual band member. We thought we would have a track list on the back like in most other digipaks but with a twist as the band would be holding a board with the song list on it. We also thought of doing shots at night with beasts involve to portray the name of the band, 'the midnight beast'. We also thought of using song lyrics in the digipak.

Justification of ideas in relation to genre and artist

We have kept to the music video genre in many ways. One way is the cinematic aspect. We are using fast editing and bright colours. This doesn't just relate to the music video genre as a whole but mirrors most indie pop music videos, which is where we drew most of our inspiration from. We are also using lip-syncing, which is a huge aspect of the music video genre, along with a band with instruments and a lead singer. Our music video relates to the artist as it has a very comedic effect. We tried to implement a lot of humour into our video, which is very much what the midnight beast like to do.

Advert Example

This advert is very famous due to the fact it has a catchy jingle and is quite funny, no matter how cringey and touched the ideas are.

Audience Theories

Why do audiences choose to consume certain texts?

How do they consume texts?

What happens when they consume texts?

The Effects Model

- The consumption of media text has an effect or influence upon the audience
- It is normally considered that this effect is negative
- Audience are passive and powerless to prevent the influence
- The power lies with the message of the text

The Hypodermic Model

- Here, the messages in media texts are injected into the audiences by the powerful, syringe-like, media
- Audience is powerless to resist
- therefore the media works like a drug and the audience is drugged, addicted, doped and duped

Process of creating a music video

Directors need to first submit an idea of what they feel the video should look like to the bands management team. The director the chooses the best one and gives the director a budget. The director then takes control and chooses settings and ideas of what happens. Some directors will send out many ideas and get rejected many times.

My Favourite Music Video

My Favourite music Video is 'Gay Bar' by Electric Six.

The video intrigues me due to its extremely controversial nature. The video includes Abraham Lincoln in very homosexual situations and insists he is gay. This comes from a rumour that the former president of the United States was gay. This is a very controversial statement as he is one of the american heroes, as he was president during the civil war and abolished slavery. This offended many viewers but the sheer controversial nature of it appeals to me. The video also made the song huge and made electric six a well known band.

Possibility of using green screen technology

After speaking to an ICT teacher we have found out that there is a possibility of using green screen technology. The ICT department has green paper that we will pin up in the drama room. Then we need to film a location and merge the 2 images together. We have a few ideas for the background image including London, or a huge stage.

Setting Photographs - 2 - Girls room

Setting ideas

We are thinking of having 3 main settings in our music video

1. Boys bedroom, where the 3 boys are having a sleepover and getting phone calls from the 3 girls

2. Girls bedroom, where the 3 girls are ringing the boys

3. In a garage. This is where the band scene will be set, this will give an impression of a 'garage band' feel to it

4. There may be other small parts of the video set in other places like outside a house, but these are the 3 main settings

Music Video Ideas

1. Three films are mentioned in this film, I thought it would be good if whenever a film is mentioned we go to the exact same shot but with a slight difference. The shot would be 3 boys on a bed watching the film, the camera would be placed behind a TV so what is on the screen is not in shot. When 'The Notebook' is mentioned, the boys would be crying with tissues, when 'Legally Blonde' is mentioned, the 3 boys would be wearing blonde wigs, and finally when 'Brokeback Mountain' is mentioned, they would be wearing Cowboy Hats.

2. As the song is about 2 sets of teenagers, 3 boys and 3 girls at a sleepover, I thought it may be clever and funny if all characters were played by the same 3 boys

3. The scene where the band members are playing the song, which we will cut to throughout, is set in a garage, to give the impression of the stereotypical garage band

Album Cover Analysis

This is the album cover for Justin Timberlake - FutureSex/LoveSounds

I think this cover is clever because of the way it is framed. The artist is on the far right whereas the disco ball is in the centre of the frame, which insists that the album is all about the music and not about the artist, who is just a well dressed add on to the music. Although his second name is in orange, which makes it stand out against the black, white and grey background. The fact that he is smashing a disco ball shows that he is trying to break out of the regular trend of the music industry and experiment with new music.

Album Cover Analysis

The Abbey Road cover - by The Beatles is possibly one of the most famous album covers of all time, there have been lots of ideas on what this means but the most simple being that they had just came out of the Abbey Road recording studio where they recorded most of their songs and needed to shoot an album cover.

There is also the "Paul is Dead" rumor, and the order they are standing in is the funeral procession. Leading the procession is John wearing white, symbolizing the clergy. Ringo, dressed in black, is the undertaker. Paul, the corpse, is out of step with the other Beatles, he is barefoot and his eyes are closed. George, dressed in work clothes, is the gravedigger. Also, Paul is smoking a cigarette, also known as a "coffin nail". He is holding the cigarette in his right hand, even though the real Paul McCartney was left handed. Behind the Beatles on the left side of the street is a Volkswagen Beetle with a license plate reading "28IF", suggesting the Paul would have been 28 if he were still alive. Actually Paul would have been 27 when Abbey Road was released. For those who thought that this was just too tantalizing to let pass, Paul Is Dead: The Great Hoaxexplained, "To the believer, 28 IF does symbolically state Paul's age—since people (especially in the Near East where Paul learned mysticism) believe we are all one year old at birth (counting the nine months of pregnancy). True, in this light, Paul would have been 28 IF he had lived!."The first three letters on the license place, "LMW," has been interpreted as "Linda McCartney Weeps". One problem with this interpretation, however, is that Paul had yet to meet Linda Eastman in 1966.

Preliminary Task

Our Preliminary Task was making a quick music video to 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart' by Elton John and KiKi Dee

We had to bluetooth the song over onto one of our team members phone, so we could get the timings of the song and work out the words

Once we had the song on a device we found an empty classroom and filmed, we only had 30 minutes to do this, so we done two takes of the 2 shot and one take of each close up.

Once we was finished with our filming we edited straight away. We edited on FinalCut Express and edited upwards in layers, this means all the timings for the song were good and we only had to sync the timings 3 times, rather than for every cut that we do. The cuts were also done differently and we brought split screen into the video, which was completely different from our thriller editing last year.

Our song choice, with lyrics

This is the music that we have chosen to make the lyrics for, it has lyrics instead of the actual video, as we are trying not to be influenced too much by the original video.

Background - The Midnight Beast

The Midnight Beast are an English band who shot to fame after parodying the Ke$ha song - Tik Tok. The band made fun of the song and changed the lyrics, the song was a huge success and made it to number 4 in the Australian charts

The band includes 3 members, Stefan Abingdon, Dru Wakely, Ashley Horne.

Adding up all of their facebook and twitter followers they have over 280,000 subscribers and on YouTube have had over 40 million views.

Booty Call (Our Song Choice) Lyrics

I'm with my friends having a sleepover at mine,
Mum said lights off, but they're still on at half nine,
There's nothing gay 'bout doing nails and doing hair,
Nor nothing gay 'bout three boys playing truth or dare,
That's when my brush vibrated right between my legs,
T-t-to my surprise it was my phone instead,
Dru makes and interception,
Grabs my phone out my hand,
'Hello you've reached The Midnight Beast, you're ruining our plans! '

B-double-o-t-y
It's three over average girls calling three under average guys
"We're fucked up and we're ready to play
We wanna do things we'll regret the next day"
HEY!
NO!
I wanna play cluedo with my bros
NO!
I wanna paint rainbows on my toes
NO!
I don't wanna hoe, I want a comforting look
When Noah kisses Allie in the notebook
(booty booty) It's just a booty call
(booty booty)even if your boo-tiful
(booty booty)It's just a booty call

Now my phones on silent, they still call on private number
I can't believe this desperation to disturb my slumber party
I'm in my dressing gowny while Ashley's making brownies
Dru is in the back room playing twister on his own,
HELL YEAH!
We're wearing our jim-jams
HELL YEAH!
We're playing the flute
HELL YEAH!
We're showing our sizes, the fucking surprise is
that yours hasn't grown

And then I hear my!
B-double-o-t-y
It's three over average girls calling three under average guys
We're fucked up and we're ready to play
We wanna do things we'll regret the next day
B-double-o-t-y
Three overconfident, stereotypical, cheerleader types,
we're fucked up and
We wanna have fun
You can be the boys we'll regret when we're done
NO!
I wanna play Sleeping Lions
NO!
I'm busy defending Zion
NO!
There's no point in calling coz I'll never respond,
The boys and me are getting tits from Legally Blonde,
(booty booty)It's just a booty call
(booty booty)Even if your boo-tiful
(booty booty)It's just a booty call

I'm not a booty call, I'm just a normal boy
I want to stay at home and play with all my toys
We are three boys not looking for three girls,
My Ring-tone's like a missile bringing war to my world
Cheese-strings, Party Rings are my favourite things,
Marshmellows with hot choclate, bitch we're living like kings!
NO!
I wanna have cheese pepperoni
NO!
I wanna play My little Pony!
NO!
I don't wanna hoe, I want a chocolate fountain
Whilst we snuggle up to watch broke back mountain
(booty booty)It's just a booty call
(booty booty)Even if your boo-tiful
It's just a booty call
(booty booty)It's just a booty call
(booty booty)Even if your boo-tiful
It's just a booty call

Song Choice

Me and my group have decided to use the song 'Booty Call' by The Midnight Beast in our music video, although the band are signed. To avoid breaching any copyright laws I emailed the band to ask if it was possible to use the song. I got this email back from the lead singers Mum.

Music Ideas

Over the time I have been at work experience I have been looking for bands on unsigned.com and been thinking of possible video ideas.

The 3 best songs I have found are:

1984 - Green eyed monster (although this song was used by a student last year)
Sounds of the Empire - Swallow up the Stars
Midnight Beast - Booty Call (although this band may be signed as they are quite well known)

The Brief - Music Video

Tasks:

- Produce a music 'promo' video
- Video must be up to 5 minutes in length
- Working in a group either on your own or in a group with up to four members

Also need to produce:

- A 'digipak' (cover only) for its release on CD
- A magazine advertisement fir the digipak

In addition to your 'promo' video you will have to produce:

- A critical evaluation
